Pellegrini: “It was a dream final, in front of our fans”

Málaga Club de Fútbol’s Chilean-born manager, Manuel Pellegrini, spoke to the media in La Rosaleda’s press room after the BBVA League match between the Malaguistas and Sporting de Gijón (1-0).

Pellegrini’s statements:

“The changing room is very happy.  We didn’t have a fixed objective at the beginning of the season, we just aspired to be the best we could and we got there performing well throughout the year.”

“The worst moments of the season were when the results didn’t come.  However, we maintained the game play and for me that was the most important thing.  It’s not just about winning and getting into Champions, rather how we got there.  The team did it through game play, and we’ve got a just qualification which we dedicate to all the fans.”

“We’ve felt the love of the fans throughout the year, but we knew that we had to achieve this here in front of our public.  It was a dream final, with lots of tension, but we’re really pleased.”

“The key was last year, when we maintained a way of playing without speculation, something the team totally understood, and which allowed us to achieve the results.  This then gave us the clarity to win as a home side and to have good games away which strengthened us, meaning it could be exploited at La Rosaleda.”

“Now we must continue growing all areas of the Club.  The way forward is to maintain the philosophy and style in the Club’s lower categories and the overall structure.  This is a mid to long term project and we’re still right in the middle of it.  The qualification ratifies the work we’ve done, but even if we didn’t have it we would still have to continue strengthening the structures.”
