Murillo extends his contract until 2029

Málaga and Diego Murillo have extended their contractual agreement until the end of the 28/29 season, meaning the defender adds two more seasons to his time with the Blue and White club.

The versatile defender, a product of the youth academy, was set to finish his contract in 2027, and has now signed his new agreement with the club alongside sporting director Loren Juarros at La Rosaleda Stadium’s offices.

Diego Murillo Domínguez, who turns 25 tomorrow, was born in Malagón (Ciudad Real) but can be considered an adopted son of Málaga due to his long trajectory in the MCF Academy.

Originally from Castilla-La Mancha, he joined the Juvenil ‘B’ team competing in the Liga Nacional in 2017. After another year with the youth setup at CD San Félix, he made his debut for Atlético Malagueño in the 19/20 season while still holding a Juvenil ‘A’ licence.

Murillo has been gaining influence in Málaga’s second team, coinciding since the 20/21 season with the current Málaga CF coach, Juan Francisco Funes. Composure, strength, and leadership, both on and off the pitch, make Murillo a defensive pillar and captain of Malagueño.

In the 22/23 season, on 24th September 2022, he made his debut at La Rosaleda with the first team in Second Division during a Málaga - Villarreal B match (1-1). He played as a right-back, and while usually a central defender, in the historic 23/24 season he often occupies the left side of the defence in the squad that achieved an epic promotion to LALIGA HYPERMOTION in Tarragona.

Since the previous 24/25 season, Murillo has been registered with the first team. It is in the current 25/26 season that he has solidified his place in the starting lineup, showing consistently high performance, and he has already surpassed 50 official appearances wearing the Blue and White shirt.

As such, Málaga CF and Diego Murillo reinforce a bond that once again highlights the club’s clear commitment to talent developed at the MCF Academy and to players dedicated to the badge and values of the club.

With a new contract extension until 2029, Málaga secures the presence of a player who has grown, and will continue to grow, within the club, both on the pitch and as a leader in the dressing room. Congratulations, ‘Muri’!
