México and Venezuela reach quarter-finals of Copa America

Mexico defeated Jamaica by 2-0, with a great performance from ‘Memo’ Ochoa. Rosales, Juanpi and Mikel will also be in the next round after Venezuela’s 1-0 win over Uruguay.

The four Malaguistas taking part in the Copa America are celebrating.  Last night, Mexico – with Ochoa in the starting line-up – and Venezuela (only Rosales played), sealed their pass to the quarter-finals, with victories against Jamaica and Uruguay respectively.

‘Memo’ Ochoa played a vital role in Mexico’s 2-0 victory against Jamaica.  The Malaguista goalkeeper, a substitute in the first match against Uruguay, was selected by Mexico coach, Juan Carlos Osorio, for the second group stage game in the Copa America, and put on a stellar performance.  Various saves by the Malaguista keeper avoided a headache for the Mexico fans.

Venezuela were also winners, leaving favourites, Uruguay by the wayside.  Albeit with a shock for Rosales, who was forced to abandon play after eight minutes after suffering a nasty blow to his ankle.  Juanpi and Mikel Villanueva watched the match from the bench.

Both Mexico and Venezuela will now play for the Group C top spot, in the early hours of Tuesday morning (2 a.m.)
