CD Logroñés’ last visit

On 22nd November 1998, Málaga CF welcomed historic team CD Logroñés to La Rosaleda, at that time the highest representative of La Rioja football. The match, corresponding to Second Division matchday 13, featured Málaga CF having had a bad run of results, losing the last four league games and being eliminated from the Copa del Rey by Real Valladolid.

For Joaquín Peiró, his role as Malaguista coach was at stake. That day the Madrid-born coach selected the following starting-11: Sánchez Broto, Bravo, Dorado, Roteta, Ruano, Movilla, De los Santos, Agostinho, Zárate, Basti and Catanha. In the second half, Caracol went on for Agostinho, Popovic for Basti and Brahim for Catanha.

The Malaguista goals were scored in minute 11, with a Basti cross following a great play from Agostinho. In the 38th minute, Catanha scored the 2-0 after a rebound from goalkeeper, Valero. The final Malaguista goal, the 3-1, was netted by Basti in minute 68 following a clearance of a Zárate shot by the rival defence. The match ended 3-2, and Peiró saved his position. Following this game, Málaga CF enjoyed a run of 17 league games on the bounce without defeat and, at the end of the season, achieved a historic promotion to the First Division.
