Match preview: Málaga CF-CD Leganés

Málaga will welcome Leganés to La Rosaleda on Sunday at 18:30, for the 9th LaLiga Santander match of 2016/17.

Leganés are the 38th club to visit La Rosaleda in the top flight.  The match will be refereed by Tenerife-born Daniel Trujillo Suárez, who is debuting in the elite, and who has never before officiated a Málaga CF match.

There is just one precedent between MCF and the pepinero rival at La Rosaleda; the 29th Second Division match of the 1998/99 season.  The game resulted in a Malaguista victory by 3-0, with goals from Guede, Catanha and Quino. The line-up for Peiró’s Málaga was: Rafa; Ruano (Valcarce 68’), Bravo, Dorado (Larrainzar 72’), Roteta; Quino, Movilla, Sandro, Agostinho; Guede (Popovic 77’) and Catanha.

Players in common Málaga CF-CD Leganés

Artero, Catanha, Canabal, Gerardo, Calandria, Antonio López, Jonatan Valle and Edu Ramos

(*) Former CD Málaga and Atlético Malagueño player, Rafa Muñoz, was a coach of CD Leganés in 2010/11

To take into account:

  • Camacho equalled Miguel Ángel Lozano in the number of League games with MCF (150) in the last match.  The midfielder is in the Top 12 list of historic players, led by Duda (301).
  • Juande Ramos reached his 50th match at the helm of the Blue and Whites in Vitoria, counting his previous time with the Club in 2003/04 (46 League and 4 Cup games).
  • Leganés, a danger away from home. The Madrid-based rival have won 3 of their 4 League away matches (0-1 in Vigo, 1-2 in Coruña and 0-1 in Granada) this season.

Historical curiosities

  • Szymanowski is the ‘pichichi’ in LaLiga with Leganés, scoring 3 goals in the last 3 games.  In 2009/10 he faced Atlético Malagueño at El Viso as a member of Antequera, in Third Division Group IX.
  • In the 2003/04 season, CD Leganés visited La Rosaleda in a Second Division match against Málaga B, on 15th May 2004 (0-0).
  • CD Málaga and CD Leganés locked horns once in the Copa del Rey, in the 3rd round, in 1988/89.  The game ended in a 1-1 draw in Madrid, and a Malaguista victory by 6-0 in the return leg, on 08/12/1988, with goals from Lauridsen, Esteban, Paquito, Azuaga, Gil and Pineda.
