To take into account:

  • Since 1999 both clubs have faced each other at La Rosaleda 16 times in official matches (15 League and one Copa del Rey).  Málaga CF secured eight victories, four draws and four defeats.
  • The match with the most goals was a 3-4 result in the 1999/2000 season, the first MCF-Athletic League clash in history.  Catanha (2) and Edgar scored for Málaga, and Lacruz (2), Alkorta and Etxeberria scored the Bilbao side’s goals.  Since then, in matches between these two rivals, there haven’t been more than three goals.
  • The best victory.  Málaga CF defeated Athletic by 3-0 on 9th March 2003, in the 25th match of 2002/03.  Pérez Burrull refereed the game, in which Joaquín Peiró’s men defeated Juup Heynckes’ side with goals from Manu Sánchez (2) and Dely Valdés.  The Málaga line-up was: Contreras; Rojas, Bravo, Litos, Valcarce; Manu Sánchez, ‘Gato’ Romero, Sandro (Miguel Ángel 66’), Musampa; Darío Silva (Leko 86’) and Dely Valdés (Canabal 81’).
  • Panamanian striker, Julio César Dely Valdés is the highest goal-scorer (three goals) in Málaga-Athletic clashes held at La Rosaleda, in League competition.
