Match preview: Málaga-Almería

Málaga CF will face UD Almería, at La Rosaleda stadium, in the 2nd round of the Copa de S.M. El Rey. The Cup debut for the 2018/19 season is a one-match eliminator.

#MálagaAlmería is taking place tomorrow, Tuesday at 18:45 (Bein LaLiga), and is the second duel between these teams in just eight days, following the League clash in Almería which ended in a Blue and White victory (0-1, Harper).

The match will be officiated by Aitor Gorostegui Fernández-Ortega from the Basque Country, who will referee Málaga CF for the first time in an official match.

To take into account

  • Possible debut of Héctor and Koné in an official match with Málaga CF. The other summer signing who still hasn’t made his debut, Haksabanovic, will be absent following his call-up by the Montenegro national team.
  • Various homegrown players who regularly train with the first team, such as Iván Rodríguez, Abqar and juvenil player Iván Jaime, could debut this season should they be called-up.
  • Last season, Almería were knocked out of the 2nd round of the Cup competition, losing to Cádiz CF at the Ramón de Carranza by 1-0.

Stats and facts

  • 10th October 2007 was when Málaga CF played its last one-match Cup eliminator. On that occasion, with Muñiz at the helm, the team beat CD Tenerife by 1-2 (goals from Eliseu and Javi Ramos).
  • Málaga CF and UD Almería previously faced each other in this KO tournament in the 3rd round of the Copa del Rey 2006/07. The one-match eliminator, which took place in Almería, ended in a 0-0 draw, with the Malaguistas winning on penalties by 4-5.
  • In the 1993/94 season both clubs, with different names (Atlético Malagueño and Almería CF), faced each other in the 1st Cup two-leg eliminator, with Almería going through to the next round.
