Match preview: #CórdobaMálaga

Málaga CF is heading to the Nuevo Arcángel tomorrow to face Córdoba CF, in the 1/16 final of the Copa del Rey. Valencian-born Mateu Lahoz will officiate the match, which kicks off at 21:00 (Bein Sports).

An unprecedented confrontation in the Cup competition between Córdoba and the Blue and Whites.  Under the Club’s current name, Málaga CF has played Córdoba CF in 10 official matches in the First, Second and Second B Divisions, with a balance of four victories, two draws and four defeats, and a total of 14 goals in favour and 11 conceded.  Two of these victories took place at Nuevo Arcángel, the last, in LaLiga, was during the 2014/15 season (1-2).

Historical curiosities

  • In 1954, CD San Álvaro changed their name to the current Córdoba CF. Under this new name, the first coach was Arcadio Martínez, who came from Atlético Malagueño (now Málaga CF), the reserve team of CD Málaga at the time.
  • Javi Gracia, Málaga CF coach between 2014 and 2016, belonged to Córdoba CF during his time as a player.

The first Córdoba-Málaga

The first time Córdoba and Málaga locked horns was on 27th December 1953 in Third Division Group VI, when the entities were named CD San Álvaro and Atlético Malagueño respectively.  The Córdoba-based rival won by 4-1, with Bernardi, a legend of the now extinct CD Málaga, scoring the goal of honour for the Blue and Whites.
