María Sampalo: “Taking the Málaga name across the world is something unique”

At just 17 years of age, the Blue and Whites’ goalkeeper has been called-up by Spain for the under-20s World Cup: “Having this opportunity is one of a kind”.

María Sampalo will defend the ‘La Roja’ goal in the forthcoming under-20s World Cup, kicking off on 13th November in Papua New Guinea.  The Malaguista, who joined the team in training earlier this week, analyses the unique experience of debuting in such a tournament, to the RFEF media:

Pride

“Taking the Málaga name, and that of Spain, across the world is something unique and difficult to explain, it’s an absolute honour”.

Unforgettable year

“This year started in the best way possible.  Firstly, being part of such a major Club like Málaga CF, and also continuing to be part of the different youth categories of the national squad”.

Málaga CF femenino

“Málaga are committing a great deal to the women’s squad, which will undoubtedly continue.  Our team will keep fighting to achieve promotion to the top flight of women’s football”.

Early international

“At just 17 years old, it’s a unique experience.  Having this opportunity at such a young age is a dream come true and one of a kind”.

Family and friends

“My family were delighted when the news broke, my mother was so emotional.  Both my family and friends agree that I’ll work extremely hard and prove what I’m capable of”.

Rivals

“Our group is fairly tough: Canada, Japan and Nigeria.  Our expectations now are to reach as high as possible”.

Destination; Papua New Guinea

“I don’t know a lot about Papua New Guinea, only what I’ve researched online.  It’s the longest trip I could have taken to play”.
