Maracena surprised Atlético Malagueño and takes the three points (1-2)

Atlético Malagueño and Maracena have today, Wednesday 18th January, played the postponed 16th match of the Third Division’s Group Nine. The game that previously had to be postponed due to rain, finished with a victory for the Granada-based side.

The group’s fifth and fourth placed teams squared up to each other in the Federación Malagueña de Fútbol ground in an intense and hard-fought game that was defined by the Malaguista attackers’ bad fortune, whilst the visitors took advantage of their good luck to move the scoreboard on, the second time definitively.

Maracena achieved the 0-1 in the first quarter of an hour after taking a corner that the local goalkeeper, Pol, was unable to stop in its tracks.  After having tried continually, Atlético Malagueño were compensated for their efforts with a great shot by Toni, from 25 metres, rendering goalie Dario ineffective.  It was minute 36 and, despite Málaga trying to up their game in order to perforate the ‘Granadino’ goal, the half time whistle blew with a one all draw, and with Jaime Molina’s squad one man up after the expulsion of the visitor, Julen.

The second part was characterised by the many moves created by Atlético Malagueño, but without creating too much danger around the rival’s goal area, thanks to a robust Maracena defence.  In one of these actions, in minute 33, the referee declared a penalty in Maracena’s favour.  In this disputed decision, the shot led to the visitors securing their second goal.

As in the first half, Malagueño was then looking to equalise, but unlike in the first 45 minutes, the home side didn’t manage to draw, despite various individual and combinative attack moves, long balls, and passes to the area.  On this occasion the Maracena defence closed down all attempts and the visitors took the three points.

With this result, Atlético Malagueño maintain their fifth position in the Third Division’s Group Nine, four points from the fourth-placed team and, as such, in the promotion zone.
