UC Sampdoria, historic rival

The Genoa-based team emerged in 1946 following the merger of Ginnastica Sampierdarenese and Società Ginnastica Andrea Doria.  During its 70 years of history, the team has spent 59 seasons in Serie A and 11 in Serie B, and has accomplished the following achievements:

  • 1 Scudetto (1990/91)
  • 4 Copas de Italia (1984/85, 1987/88, 1988/89, 1993/94)
  • 1 Supercopa de Italia (1991)
  • 1 European Cup Winners’ Cup (1989/90)

(*) Runner-up in European Cup (1991/92)

(**) Last season they finished in 15th place in Serie A.

Great players have been part of this team, including: Vialli, Pagliuca, Montella, Mancini, Carboni, Toninho Cerezo, Trevor Francis, Gullit, Klinsmann, Mihajlovic, Juan Sebastián Verón, Seedorf, and Spanish players such as Luis Suárez and Víctor Muñoz.  Currently, the star player is veteran ex-Madrid playmaker, Antonio Cassano.

There have also been two players who have been part of both Málaga CF and UC Sampdoria: Enzo Maresca, who signed to the Genoa-based team after leaving the Blue and Whites in the summer of 2012; and Fernando Tissone, who signed to Málaga CF in 2013, after his contract with Sampdoria ended (on loan to RCD Mallorca).
