The match between the Malagistas and the Madridistas began with the Whites (Madrid) having possession of the ball almost exclusively during the first five minutes, although they didn’t manage to get too close to Willy Caballero’s goal area. For their part, Málaga were putting on pressure upfront to try and steal the ball and attack directly, but the Whites maintained their control.
The game’s first danger moment came when Málaga’s Van Nistelrooy passed to Isco who took a shot at Casillas’s goal. In another of these occasions the Dutch player passed to Monreal who headed the ball to the net, but that also failed to make the grade. A minute later, Sergio Sánchez passed from the right wing, but it was intercepted by the Whites’ defence.
From that moment, it was Málaga who created nearly all the goal chances in this half with some great play on the flanks and in the forwards’ attack. Similarly, Sebastián Fernández’s attempt and Eliseu’s long distance shot really put the squeeze on Casillas.
With half an hour to go, the Whites balanced out a little, thanks to some moves from their midfielders and forwards. Kedhira’s shot was the clearest chance they had but it was resolutely rejected by Willy.
Nearly at half time, a shot by Sergio Ramos, after a Xabi Alonso free-kick, almost notched up the game’s first score. However, the last few chances came from Málaga with two consecutive corners, and a Ronaldo shot that the Málaga goalkeeper skilfully saved. As such, the first half ended with a goalless draw, despite both teams having a plethora of goals opportunities.
The second half began with a Málaga corner that was finished-off with a shot from Eliseu and a double move from Van Nistelrooy, but both of these were seen off by the rival’s defence. Minutes later Málaga’s clearest chance came when Eliseu, having rescued the ball which had been snatched from Isco by two Madrid players, shot it from the left wing, causing some serious bother for Casillas.
In minute 16, came the second half’s clearest chance so far as Cristiano Ronaldo, after a pass from Lass, shot it towards Willy Caballero’s goal, but once again it was saved decisively. As the minutes ticked by, the game was increasingly open as both teams realised that they had to advance the scoreboard. With this in mind, Eliseu had another chance on the left wing, where he passed to Van Nistelrooy, but the shot was failed to make the grade. Then came Higuáin’s disallowed goal (it was out) and the other Málaga opportunities kept the Madrid defence on their toes.
However Lady Luck was on the side of the visitors who managed to get an advantage on the scoreboard with a shot by Benzemá which Willy Caballero was, ultimately, unable to save, just when it looked like he had. The one- nil score with 20 minutes to go changed the match’s dynamic and it obliged Málaga to attack with more intensity and the Whites became more comfortable in attack and stronger in defence.
But then the game began to fizzle out, intensity was lower, and there fewer chances for both teams. The last few chances came from a cross pass from Van Nistelrooy to Monreal that Rondón couldn’t convert and a header by Toulalan.
In the end, it was a win for Real Madrid, meaning that Málaga Club de Fútbol is out of, and Real Madrid is through to, the Copa del Rey’s quarter finals.
