Kilometre 8: Sporting de Gijón

Málaga scored point number seven in LaLiga SmartBank 19/20, at home, to Real Sporting de Gijón. The final 0-0 result marks the third draw so far this season at Martiricos.

Here are some of the highlights of #MálagaSporting that we review here in this kilometre:

Munir padlocks the goal

For the second time this season Munir kept a clean sheet. Although during the 90 minutes Munir barely had a thing to do, two rapid actions from Sporting in stoppage time could have changed the fate of play. Carmona tested the reflexes of the Melilla-born keeper in both actions, with Munir making two superb saves to keep the point in the pot.

The consolidation of Luis Muñoz

Up to now he has only played away from La Rosaleda, but yesterday was the first time in front of the fans this season and he didn’t disappoint. As a defensive pivot, he knew how to get the ball ahead of the two centre-backs. In defence, he was embedded between Luis Hernández and Lombán to fortify midfield and steal numerous balls. Bravo, Luis.

Antoñín is all grown up

La Palmilla has nurtured some great Málaga players, Canillas and Apoño to name but a few. Antoñín, if he continues at this level of involvement and effort, is on his way to gaining a foothold within the first team for a long time to come. Like in Albacete, he showed flashes of quality on the left wing of the attack during his debut at La Rosaleda.

Just one change by VSDA

The Blue and White coach only made one substitution during the game, Antoñín replaced Lorenzo in 58’. An unequivocal sign of the confidence shown in 10 out of the 11 players who took part in the entire match. Only the goal was missing to bring more clarity to the team’s work as the lads continue in search of victory that has not been seen since the league debut in Santander.
