Gámez : “Right now we’re in UEFA positions, and our mission is to defend these positions”

Jesús Gámez, captain of Málaga CF, attended a press conference at La Rosaleda, ahead of the league clash against Rayo Vallecano.

Jesús Gámez's statements:

(Last two defeats) “We have a very good chance against Rayo of holding our heads up and looking forward, that’s our mission.  Against Levante it was a difficult game that we weren’t expecting, and with Madrid we knew it would be difficult, but no-one wants to lose 4-0.  We now need to have more distance from those behind us, who are closing in on us a bit.  Madrid?  We need to be tougher in certain aspects and not make it so easy.  The boss is aware of what happened in these games, we can’t set a long term goal, but now we’re in UEFA and our mission is to defend this position, and if we can do this higher up the table, it’s better for everyone.”

(Objective: improve) “The league is long and you can’t win every game, there are always lows, and we hope this has now passed.  We know that you have to be strong from the start and also goal chances transform you, allowing you to take on the game.  First half against Levante?  These are games that you plan and for various reasons, they turn out another way.  You have to go out, stand up and fight till the last minute.”

(Rayo Vallecano)  “They’re stronger following an important win in Betis, they’re very motivated in front of their fans and want to please them, but we’ll try and stop them as we need the points.  It will be a pretty intense match.  They have great players, Piti and Michu are playing very well at the moment, and Lass is also a very good footballer. We have to be on top of them all the time and ensure our defence is strong; this is one of the keys to ensure we make the most of every opportunity.  Koke is also very motivated playing against Málaga.”
