Gámez: “It leaves a bad taste in the mouth having been the better side and not having won the match”

Málaga Club de Fútbol players Juanmi, Jesús Gámez and Weligton spoke to the media in the Mixed Zone after the match between Málaga CF and Atlético de Madrid (0-0).

The players’ statements:

Juanmi:
“The team pretty much had possession throughout the match, Atlético got pushed back and we tried to surge forward to get some chances, but we weren’t lucky in that respect.  They were a team that came to shut down the game and it’s not easy to play against teams like that.”

“They’re a direct rival for Europe and we must continue to fight for those positions.”

“It’s a complicated week, with these games, and with the one against Real Madrid in which we’re fairly confident and in which we’re keen to shake-up the qualifiers.”

Jesús Gámez:
“Leaving a clean sheet was one of our objectives but it leaves a bad taste in the mouth having dominated, been better, and more complete, especially in the first half, and then not have taken the three points.  They were waiting to go on the counter-attack, something we knew they were going to do and they stopped our game with fouls.  Now we’ve got to rest and prepare for the game on Tuesday.”

“The Copa is hard but you’ve got to believe in it.  We saw the fans queuing and we know that the public is going to be with us.  If we got that 0-2 at the Bernabéu, we can do it.”

Weligton:
“We were hoping for more, the three points, but they came with a new manager, in fighting spirit, and very aggressive.  We kept a clean sheet and that should be highlighted.  We didn’t let Atlético play their game and we’re in the race for Europe.”

“I started the New Year hoping to play a good game and I felt that I did that and, little by little, I’m getting the form.”

“The Copa qualifier is open, something many teams can’t say, therefore we’re happy for that and it’ll be great to take it on at home.”
