Following on from Cambrils and Vera

Málaga CF’s Juvenil ‘A’ team sealed a place in the semi-finals of the Copa de Campeones yesterday. Either Levante UD or FC Barcelona will be the Malaguistas’ next rival.

The season for Nacho Pérez Santamaría’s team has been exceptional. In the league, they dominated with authority Subgroup A in Group IV of the División de Honor, winning the regional title with record stats, beating rivals such as Sevilla FC, Granada CF, Real Betis Balompié and Cádiz CF. In total, the lads obtained 22 wins and two draws (just one defeat) in 25 games, scoring 79 goals (3’16 per game) and conceding 16 (0’64 average).

With no Copa del Rey juvenil during the 20/21 season due to COVID-19, the RFEF decided to maintain the Copa de Campeones but with a new format, with the quarter-finals pitting the best eight teams in Spain against each other in two-legged ties. And the best up to now, in terms of numbers, is Málaga CF. The lads are also the first to qualify to the Final Four after defeating Athletic Club in the quarter-finals by 3-5 on aggregate. The ‘pichichis’ of the season up to now, Loren (26 goals) and Roberto (21 goals), together with Larrubia, scored the five goals to get MCF to the semis.

It’s perfectly feasible to dream of ‘The Third’ and emulate the magical generations that won in Cambrils (2003) and Vera (2016). Málaga CF’s rival will be decided this afternoon in the tie between Levante UD and FC Barcelona (1-1 in the first leg). In the other matches, also taking place today, Real Madrid CF will face Club Atlético de Madrid (2-1 to the Whites in the first leg) and RC Deportivo are up against UD Las Palmas (2-1 win for the team from Galicia in the first leg).

At a venue yet to be determined, the semi-finals of the Spanish Copa de Campeones will be held on Thursday 24th June and the grand final on Sunday 27th June.
