The Valladolid-born centre-back has joined Málaga CF on a free transfer, signing a one-year deal for the 2026/27 season with the option of a further year, after making more than 140 appearances in Spain's top flight.
Fernando Calero Villa, born on 14th September 1995 in Boecillo (Valladolid), is an experienced centre-back with an extensive career in Spanish football. Strong in defence and comfortable playing out from the back, he brings both solidity and composure to Málaga's back line.
Fernando began his footballing journey in the Real Valladolid youth ranks before joining the Málaga CF Academy as a youth player, where he spent five seasons. During his time at the club, he also made 66 appearances for Atlético Malagueño. After his spell on the Costa del Sol, he returned to Real Valladolid, spending one season with the ‘Promesas’, before moving up to the first team and helping secure promotion to the First Division in his debut senior campaign in 2017/18.
After one season with Valladolid's first team, Calero joined Real Club Deportivo Espanyol de Barcelona, where he went on to spend seven seasons and played a key role in two promotions back to Spain's elite.
The 30-year-old arrives at Málaga CF following the expiry of his contract with Espanyol, bringing with him a wealth of experience from more than 140 LaLiga appearances. A committed and hard-working defender with strong ties to both Málaga and the MCF Academy, Calero will now put his experience at the service of Juanfran Funes' side.
Best of luck in your second spell at Málaga, Fernando. Welcome home!
