Demichelis bids farewell to football with the family

The Málaga CF central defender, who announced his retirement at the end of the season, was surrounded by the Blue and Whites’ squad during his emotional press conference.

Martín Demichelis will hang up his boots at the end of the season, after more than 15 years in the footballing elite. A special and tough moment in a footballer’s career, but the player was surrounded by his current teammates, with first team coach, Míchel and sports director, Francesc Arnau at the helm.

He debuted with River Plate at 20 years old, on 2nd September 2001, and since then his career has been full of success. After two years with the Argentine team, the defender signed to one of the European greats, Bayern Munich. In eight seasons with the German team, he won four Bundesligas and a European runner-up title.

In January 2011, Demichelis landed at Málaga CF, where he remained for two and a half seasons during the team’s golden era. He played a part in the squad’s qualification to the Champions League, and was a key player in the team’s journey to the quarter-finals of the maximum competition on the continent the following year.

Following his time with the Blue and Whites, he signed to Atlético de Madrid, although he was transferred to Manchester City before the season started. With the English side, he won the Premier League title. After three seasons with the ‘Citizens’, and a half-season spell with RCD Espanyol, he returned to Málaga CF in January this year to put the finishing touch to his career at the end of the current season.

A marshal in Argentina’s defence since 2005, he has taken part in two World Cups (South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014), a Copa Ámerica (2015) and a Copa Confederaciones in 2005 (Germany). His biggest achievement defending his country’s colours was in the Brazil World Cup final, with Argentina finishing as runners-up. Thank you for everything Martín!
