Another comeback against Getafe and qualification for the second round (2-2)

Málaga Club de Fútbol and Getafe Club de Fútbol played their return match for the knockout leg of the Copa del Rey at La Rosaleda stadium.

The match between the Malaguistas and the Getafenses started off very equal, with a game without many chances created, although Getafe were more determined knowing that not scoring a goal would leave them unable to make a tie in the knockouts, meaning the first quarter of an hour of play had a low pace.

Indeed, after 20 minutes, only a shot by Ruud Van Nistelrooy created any kind of danger for Getafe, who hardly approached Willy Caballero’s area; and Sergio Sánchez and Joaquín were able to reach the Madrid side’s penalty area without too much trouble, making Codina having to intervene on a shot by Apoño.

Minute by Minute, Málaga controlled the game and created chances, with Seba Fernñandez and Van Nistelrooy, deserving a special mention, likewise for Joaquín who was active on both wings.

It was in the last five minutes of the first half when the game became properly interesting.  Firstly, with a Getafe goal that the referee disallowed because of tackle on Toulalan from Cata Díaz; and secondly because there was the best move of the match and a goal for Málaga.   The goal came after an amazing collective move that began with Joaquín taking the ball out of the sky and starting a fast attack in which Isco Apoño, Eliseu, Seba all took part and finally it was and Van Nistelrooy who created an unstoppable force for Codina.  It was the end of the first 45 minutes and Málaga were one nil up on the scoreboard.

The second half began with a more measured Getafe, producing more moves.  In one of them, Valera took a shot from the right wing and unfortunately as it was being saved it hit the post and entered the Malaguista net.  A one all draw with the whole of the second half to play for, a situation which Getafe took full advantage of as they created more chances around Málaga’s half.

It was becoming a close match and Pellegrini’s men sought to wheel-out their quality attack, while Getafe were also creating danger, even though they didn’t have many clear goal chances except for a shot by Güiza that was saved by Caballero.

Just half an hour to go and Málaga was left with one less man on the pitch after the expulsion of Weligton for a foul against Barrada.  With 10 minutes until the final whistle and with one player down, Málaga turned to the attack of their three forwards: Seba Fernández, Rondón and Buonanotte, the last two of these recently added in the second half.

Then came the second sending off, but this time for Getafe: Casquero was expelled for a move behind Toulalan, making the number of men on the field equal, and with the score also tied.

But not for very long as a foul in Málaga’s favour led to Diego Buonanotte taking a shot in front of Getafe’s area, which he was able to convert.  This goal allowing him to debut as a goal scorer for the Blue and Whites.  So a two nil draw, and five minutes of extra time.

Five intense and tense minutes, but they were finished off with no altercations, leaving the two nil draw as it was, meaning Málaga Club de Fútbol now qualifies for the second round of the Copa del Rey.
