A Málaga basketball giant leaves us

José María Martín Urbano passed away last night at 71 years of age. He was one of the fathers of basketball in Málaga and the last coach of the CD Malaga club.

The gigantic figure of José María leaves a great void within Málaga basketball. After coaching the ‘Juvenil’ squad, in 73/74 he took the reins of the CD Málaga basketball team. A crucial season for the growth of many young homegrown players.

Martín Urbano forged his legacy in Málaga basketball within the ranks of Caja de Ronda, the predecessor of the current CB Unicaja de Málaga, as coach and assistant in several cycles from the end of the 70s to the beginning of the 90s. His hard work in the development of basketball in Málaga, along with his inseparable Alfonso Queipo de Llano, made him a true institution of Málaga basketball.

Like Alfonso, his unmistakable voice, charisma and knowledge were captured for many years on radio, television and written media on the Costa del Sol, on which he left an unforgettable mark. And, like Alfonso, he played a key role in the collaboration with the MCF Foundation on the 'Giants of Málaga Basketball' book.

Unfortunately, during 2022, three of the four CD Málaga basketball coaches have left us. Alfonso Queipo in January, Manolo Jato in May and José María yesterday.

Our most sincere condolences to the many friends and, above all, relatives of Martín Urbano, a basketball giant. Rest in peace.
