This Wednesday 8th March 2023 marks International Women's Day. As a Malagueña and footballer, Ana Carmona 'Veleta' is an inspiration for all players.
Málaga CF celebrates a day marked on the calendar with the memory and fascinating example of Ana Carmona Ruiz, 'Veleta', as the common thread on this very special day.
Veleta's story, unknown to many Malaguistas, is the backbone of our own 8MCF, highlighting an extraordinary example of freedom. At the beginning of the last century, Malagueña women were not allowed to play football. Ana's passion (born in 1908) was such that she dressed as a man and trained when nobody could see her. She played at Sporting Club de Málaga, and her quality was so great that she, with her hair up and wearing a looser kit when a team player was missing, showed her talent in training.
Despite everything, Veleta experienced problems due to her gender and left the capital to go to Vélez-Málaga, continuing her dream of playing football until, at the age of 32, an illness ended her short life. Her unlimited enthusiasm paved the way for other women who also wanted to enjoy playing football in a society that, at the time, was black and white.
This afternoon, in the 'Juan Cortés' press room at La Rosaleda, the unmissable figure of Veleta will be remembered and football will be the hot topic in an all-female roundtable featuring Alba Calvo, racing driver; civil guard María Dolores Pérez and bus driver, Lidia Wizner, as well as MCF Femenino coordinator, Alicia Fuentes, and former Malaguista player Isa Guerrero.
The Loyal Malaguista winners of the prize draw, held in the Private Area of the official Blue and White website, will attend the round table. Before it gets underway, they’ll visit MCF’s Museum & Tour at La Rosaleda, stopping at the showcase dedicated to the famous 'Triple' won by women's team Atlético Málaga, with Alicia Fuentes talking about winning the three titles.
Málaga Club de Fútbol, with the fervent example of Veleta, highlights the importance of equal opportunities this 8M, particularly in sport and football. This is for you, Nita.
