30 years in the Blue and White sky

Juan Gómez González, ‘Juanito’ left us on 2nd April 1992. Three decades in which his indomitable spirit has been present in the hearts of the Malaguista and Malagueña fans.

It feels like yesterday when fate snatched the life of the most brilliant and charismatic footballer in the history of Málaga and the province. That traffic accident in which Juan lost his life at just 37 years old made him an eternal legend.

The star of Los Boliches, Fuengirola, where he took his last steps as a player in the 90/91 season in Segunda B, was an absolute legend of Real Madrid CF and the undisputed star of the Spanish national team in the 1980s.

Glory and titles mark the career of a White… and Blue icon. Juanito, in the twilight of his career, made history with his Málaga. In that 'Súper Málaga' of the 87/88 season that brilliantly rose to the First Division, Juanito was the undisputed leader of a dream team. The number '7' scored a dozen goals in the silver division, and five more the following year in the elite with Club Deportivo Málaga. Two magical campaigns at La Rosaleda.

Juan Gómez was linked to the Club at a later stage as technical secretary, but his vocation was to coach, and he tried his luck in Mérida. He enjoyed great success until he lost his life far too soon, having left a mark on the sport not even eternity can erase.

On the 30th anniversary of his death, Málaga Club de Fútbol wanted to pay tribute to the memory of Juanito last night during Girona-Málaga held at Montilivi. The intention was for the team captain to wear a commemorative armband with his name and the number 7 that he wore for so many years. However, it couldn’t not be carried out due to the current regulations of the competition. In these difficult sporting moments, Juanito is the best example of how to overcome adversity. His spirit will always be linked to Malaga.

From 1992 to 2022 30 years have passed. How much we miss you. But in the heart of your city and the Malaguista fans, you are and will always be present.

Juan, you never left.
