Van Nistelrooy is named best goal scorer of the last decade by the IFFHS

The Málaga Club de Fútbol striker, Ruud van Nistelrooy, starred in the IFFHS World Football Gala 2012, held on Monday night in Barcelona.

Various famous faces from the world of football attended the International Federation of Football History and Statistics Gala, where 37 prizes were awarded, including best goal scorer of the last decade, Ruud van Nistelrooy, presented by Sheikh Mohammad Al Qassmi.

Receiving this award was very special for Málaga’s Dutch striker (see comments on www.malagacf.com):  “It’s amazing to be recognised for this length of time.  It’s a great honour to be awarded for 10 years of hard work and dedication.  I’ve been fortunate to play for major Clubs over the years, as well as for my country.  It’s been amazing, with some very significant moments in my career”.  Van Nistelrooy remembers some special moments:  “There have been goals I’ve scored when playing for Holland in the Eurocopa and World Cup, as well as matches in the Champions League and with Real Madrid…I remember a goal I scored against a Romanian team in Bucharest.  As well as four goals in a match I played with Manchester against Spartak in Old Trafford.  These are special memories for me throughout this last decade”.  Ruud also mentioned other players who have broken records in the last few seasons:  “Messi and Cristiano have scored more goals than anyone.  These two players have changed numbers in football, and continue to break records.  It’s absolutely amazing that they are playing in this League, and we get to seem them every week.  We really have to enjoy watching these two phenomenal players”.

Lastly, the Málaga striker revealed who may win this award within the next 10 years:  “It’s a long period of time, and so much can happen, but I think it’ll be between Messi and Cristiano.  It’s hard to predict what will happen in 10 years”.
