1997-1998 Season

At last an unforgettable season for all those malaguistas who saw their team manage to get promoted to the Second Division. It wasn’t in the least bit easy. With Grupo Bahia and Antonio Asensio as new owners of Málaga Club de Fútbol, the Malagueñan businessman Fernando Puche took over the presidency. The injection of capital allowed the club to spend a significant some of money on putting together a team.

The campaign started with the longed for and missed ‘Tolo’ Plaza at the helm, although an accumulation of poor results ended with his dismissal and Ismael Díaz took his place. The Asturian did not do much better, although in the end the team managed to win the title of Group IV of Second Division B. Beasin, Talavera and Terrasa were the blue and white’s rivals in the play-offs.

After an irregular play-off, the team reached the last game with little chance of promotion. A sequence of events had to take place for them to do it. They had to beat Tarrasa with a three-goal difference and also Talavera could not win against Beasin. However they produced a miracle.

Málaga Club de Fútbol did its homework and overcame the Catalán team 4 – 1 with a hat trick from Guede in an afternoon of pure Málaga football magic. A triumph that, together with Talavera’s draw on Basque soil allowed Málaga Club de Fútbol to raise the roof celebrating the nerve-wracking promotion to the Second Division.
