Weligton Robson Pena de Oliveira (Fernandópolis, Brazil - 26/08/79) arrived at Málaga Club de Fútbol in 2007/08 on loan from Swiss team Grasshopper, the team where he was named as best defender during his last season.  During his first year with the Blue and Whites, Weligton played 38 matches and was a key part of the team’s defence which led to First Division promotion.

In 2008/09, Málaga Club de Fútbol acquired the rights of the Brazilian-born player. During his second season with Málaga CF, Weligton played 34 First Division games, scoring his first goal for the Blue and Whites.  He also played one Copa del Rey match.

In 2009/10, Weligton sustained an ankle injury, preventing him from playing in the remainder of the League competition.  He took part in 21 League matches that year, and four Copa del Rey games, beating his scoring record with three goals.

In 2010/11, following the arrival of Sheikh Al Thani to the Club, the ‘Malaguista’ was a permanent fixture in the team line-up, playing 31 League and four Cup games.

In 2011/12, the year in which Málaga CF qualified for the UEFA Champions League, Weligton was again a crucial member of the team, taking part in 20 matches and scoring one goal.

Last season, Weligton was part of the League and UEFA Champions League competitions, playing a total of 49 matches (33 League, 11 Champions and five Copa del Rey games), scoring two League goals.

Weligton still hasn’t made his debut this season, as he sustained a fractured collarbone in pre-season training.  However the ‘Malaguista’ defender is in the final stages of recovery and has been in group training for several weeks.
