Muñiz introduced nine changes to the starting-11 in respect of the last match against Tenerife. Together with Kieszek, again in goal, there was a new defence with homegrown players Iván and Abqar – official debut with first team – plus Diego González and Juankar; in midfield, Lacen was accompanied by Moroccan players Boulahroud and the reserve team’s Hicham, as well as Juanpi who returned to the starting line-up; and on the attack, two new incorporations making their debut: Koné and Héctor.

In minute 10 Málaga made the first dangerous approach. A perfect deep pass from Abqar to Juanpi who, from the left wing, skied the ball over the Almería goal. Iván Martos, in 28’, shook Kieszek’s goal with a great shot on the visitors’ first opportunity. The Blue and Whites responded quickly with a close-range header from Iván in 35’ that went high when the crowd was already chanting a goal.

And, just before half-time a foul on Hicham led to a penalty for Málaga CF, with Héctor Hernández converting to give the home side the lead (1-0, 45+1’).

In the second half the team got off to an energetic start. Boulahroud, with a strong shot, forced the rival keeper to make an impressive save in minute 47. Meanwhile, Almería tried to shake off the increasing Malaguista dominance. Hicham, with an individual counter action, sought a goal in 62’ with a long shot. Three minutes later Almería equalised. Sekou scored a penalty that was saved by Kieszek, but again Sekou took advantage of the Polish keeper’s clearance to score (1-1, 65’).

Ontiveros replaced Juanpi as Muñiz’s first substitution in minute 69 of play. The Marbella-born winger, in the 71st minute, tried his luck with a trademark action and a final shot that missed the target. Koné then attempted a goal in 76’ with a corner shot to the right. Immediately afterwards, the visitors went ahead thanks to a goal from Montoro (1-2, 78’), to turn the tables in their favour.

Muñiz used up his substitutions in 83’ by bringing on Blanco Leschuk and juvenil player making his debut, Iván Jaime, in place of homegrown defenders Iván Rodríguez and Abqar. However, there was barely any time to generate any clear chances against an Almería that managed the final minutes of the game well. The 1-2 final result confirms, for another season, how elusive the Cup competition is for Málaga CF.
