UD Almería the first Cup rival

Málaga CF will begin the Copa del Rey journey at La Rosaleda stadium on Wednesday 12th September in a single match.

The KO tournament returns to La Rosaleda on 12th September. Muñiz’s men will face UD Almería in the second round of the Copa de S.M. El Rey. The match will take place between LaLiga 1|2|3 matchdays 4 and 5 in which the Blue and Whites will face CD Tenerife and Córdoba CF at home respectively.

The knockout clash with Almería will be a single match format. The winning team will reach the Third Round, where the games will continue to be between Second Division teams.

Background

This will be the second time that these rivals have faced each other with the current names. The previous match, in the Third Round, was a single match and with both teams in the Second Division, played in Almería on 4th October 2006. Málaga CF, coached by Marcos Alonso, defeated Unai Emery’s UD Almería on penalties (4-5) following a goalless draw at full-time.

Under different names, there have been other clashes between these rivals in the Cup competition:

  • Atlético Malagueño (reserve team) – AD Almería (1972-1973, 1978-1979 and 1979-1980)
  • Atlético Malagueño (first team) – Almería CF (1993-1994)

In these four matches, the Almería outfit always qualified to the next round.

(*) Since the 2007/08 season, Málaga CF hasn’t competed in a one-leg tie in the Copa del Rey.
