There’s no other way…it’s time for the comeback! (4-2)

Málaga CF lost out to RC Deportivo, at Abanca-Riazor stadium, in the first leg of the promotion play-off tie to LaLiga Santander. Luis Hernández and Ontiveros gave the Malaguistas a partial advantage, but the home side turned it around with goals from Carlos Fernández (2), Pedro and Borja Valle.

Malaguista coach, Víctor Sánchez del Amo introduced six changes to the line-up on the return to the club where he was a player and coach, in relation to the last LaLiga 1|2|3 match against Elche CF. Munir, Pau, Keidi, Adrián, Ontiveros and Blanco Leschuk were back in the starting-11.

The Malaguistas dominated play in the opening stages, against a Deportivo close to their opponent’s expectations. After the first quarter of an hour the goals arrived, one for each side. An electric Ontiveros outwitted a defender on the left wing to assist with a pass to Luis Hernández who, incorporated into the attack, was most unforgiving with a header into goal (0-1, 18’). With barely any time to enjoy the lead, the locals were awarded a penalty that was converted by Dépor striker, Carlos Fernández (1-1, 21’).

In the final stretch of the first half Dépor improved, with Pedro generating a promising chance in 34’. Shortly afterwards, the Riazor fell silent. An outstanding Javi Ontiveros propelled a remote-controlled missile that proved unstoppable for the rival keeper. A stunning goal to remember (1-2, 37’). With the sweet taste of the Marbella-born player’s goal, the match went to half-time.

In the second half the home side came out with more impetus, particularly with the insistence of Borja Valle. Following a few notable minutes by Martí, the aforementioned number ‘19’ combined with Pedro, who launched a powerful shot from the heart of the area straight past Munir (2-2, 56’). MCF didn’t wait to react, thanks, of course, to Ontiveros. In 62’ he slammed a corner into the left post of the Dépor goal. A minute later, the locals took the lead on the scoreboard with a second goal from Carlos Fernández (3-2, 63’).

Immediately afterwards there was a double Malaguista substitution, with Pacheco and Erik Morán replacing Adrián and Boulahroud in 66’. In the final stages of play, the locals scored a fourth goal. Borja Valle, with a dry shot to the right post increased Deportivo’s advantage (4-2, 78’). An injured Pau was substituted by Diego González in defence (80’).

In the closing minutes Málaga advanced their lines, and Blanco Leschuk in 94’, just before the final whistle, narrowly missed out on a header into goal that was saved by Giménez. The 4-2 final result gives Deportivo a two-goal advantage ahead of the second leg of the first promotion play-off tie, taking place at La Rosaleda on Saturday at 21:00. Here’s to the comeback!
