Pellicer: “The fans have been a real shot in the arm”

The Málaga CF coach held a press conference following the win against Villarreal B at Estadio de la Cerámica. “We got goosebumps when we arrived; it was highly emotional and motivating,” he said.

Blue and White coach, Sergio Pellicer held a press conference after the 1-2 win against Villarreal B at the Estadio de la Cerámica.

Firstly, he had words of gratitude for the fans who supported and encouraged the team throughout the game: “We have to enjoy today and thank the people who came here, they show that they do believe in us. The reception we have received has been a real shot in the arm for our players, and that is the most important thing. I know what it is to get up at seven in the morning and come to the situation we are in, eight points behind, yet now five with one more game.”

He went on to say that “we’re going to continue competing, in a constant fight with this victory, knowing that at home we have to be strong. In this block of three games, we had to get six points, we have three and are going to look for the other three to see the future in a different way,” he added.

Sergio Pellicer values the victory, considering “the rival we were up against, who are having a great season, and playing at their stadium. In the first half we were a far superior team,” going on to add that “if you don't score the final third goal, in the situation we’re in, with that anxiety for victory, what happened happens. It's time to suffer, Lago came on and sustained injury in the first action, they scored the goal with him requesting the substitution. Everything that happens is adverse, which sums up the season, but we’re here surviving.”

The Malaguista coach is already focusing on next Sunday: "We have the Cartagena match coming up, this group and the fans have been suffering for two months.” Pellicer acknowledges that the team “makes a huge effort” which means that “even though we have been beaten and had unfair results, we get up and keep going.” And the fans play a crucial role in continuing to believe in the team: “They never let us down and that's the most important thing for our players. There are very few teams in Spain that at eight points from safety and with the season we’ve had, have so many fans travelling to support them. We got goosebumps when we arrived; it was highly emotional and motivating, moreso than the technical-tactical speech I can give, as they saw it for themselves.”

“I want to think about the Cartagena match at our stadium. If 500 fans came here today, imagine on Sunday how they’ll cheer us on. We need them to drive us forward against a tough rival,” he concluded.
