Pellegrini: "We’re capable of defeating Zenit tomorrow.”

Málaga CF coach, Manuel Pellegrini held a press conference this morning in La Rosaleda, along with Malaguista striker, Javier Saviola.

Statements by Pellegrini

“I think we also need to be careful of Anderlecht, they didn’t just qualify for the Champions League to make up the numbers.  They are three very difficult teams, as is the case in each group.  Some have bigger name teams than others, perhaps some have more potential, others have achieved more titles, like Zenit – who have been Russian League champions twice, and really strengthened the squad.  Thinking that there is perhaps an easier team to beat than the rest in our group, is the worst mistake we can make.”

“Every football match is different.  Every defeat has its consequences, and every win boosts morale, but I don’t think this will be as important in tomorrow’s match.  The most crucial thing we can do tomorrow is to play exactly like we have been doing in the past few matches.  The excitement and euphoria surrounding this game is felt by all the fans and the entire city.  This is the first time we’ve played in the Champions League, and the team is completely focused on this match.  If we want to get a lot further in this competition, we need to keep working hard, concentrated, and each player needs to deliver an excellent performance to help the team.”

“We’re not going to get the chance to see Hulk in this match, but if we think that Zenit is only about Hulk, then we’re very wrong indeed.”

“We’re capable of defeating Zenit tomorrow at home, and then we can focus on winning the second match and hope to qualify to the next round.”

Statements by Saviola

"The team is playing well.  Each victory makes us stronger and more motivated to keep winning and improving.  I’ve been well received so far, and think I’ve adapted quickly to the team, thanks to my team mates, the coaching staff and everyone that works at the Club.  It’s so important for a player to ‘fit in’, as it really improves performance on the pitch.  Being part of the Champions League is one of the best competitions in the world for a player, which is why we need to perform our best tomorrow, as we’re up against a tough team who want to win as much as we do.  We’ll be focusing all our energies on winning this game.”
