Pellegrini: “We had the opportunity of winning 2-1”

Málaga CF manager, Manuel Pellegrini, spoke to the media in La Rosaleda’s press room after the match against Real Sociedad.

Pellegrini’s statements:

Analysis of the match
“Fifteen points remain and there are many different teams fighting for them.  An opportunity of getting two more points escaped us.  The team arrived after having fewer days off than Real Sociedad, and the team lacked the necessary spark.  But, equally, we had four or five clear goal chances which we could’ve converted; in addition Martín Demichelis’ goal looked legal to me.  Bravo was also good in a few decisive saves and we didn’t have the clarity to convert the opportunities we had.”

Disallowed legitimate goal
“Real only reached our goal area on one occasion, which Rubén handled very well.  We had little mobility due to, I think, the little recovery time we’ve had between one game and the next, barely 48 hours.  I wish the rest periods for all teams were the same, also we had the opportunity of winning 2-1 and unfortunately they disallowed a goal that I thought was legitimate and which would’ve given us the win.  But in general terms we’re left with the impression that we’ve let two points escape us especially as we were one man up on them.”

Rubén / heart and momentum
“Rubén did well, the times he’s been called on to play have been in very difficult conditions.  They converted a goal which wasn’t down to him.  We’ve notched up one point and now we have to move on and look for points with Osasuna, a direct rival for us.  You’ve always got to shoot to the goal to score, but it wasn’t the joyful team we normally have at La Rosaleda due to the lack of necessary recovery time.  With heart and momentum we created opportunities towards the end and it’s not easy with nine players stuck behind.”

Satisfactory campaign
“All the points that one leaves behind are complicated.  Football is rights and wrongs, in Villareal we lost in the last minute and today, despite the fact we had a goal, we weren’t lucky.  Let’s see what happens in the last five matches as we try and remain as high up as possible.  The team is five matches away from the end, and if we finish in Champions I think it would be a more than satisfactory campaign – especially as we’re currently six players down.  The squad’s responded well and team today gave their all under the conditions in which we played this match.”
