Stats and facts

  • Although Málaga CF never faced Real Oviedo in the Cup, CD Málaga did come up against the ‘Carbayón’ rival in two Cup ties.
  • In the 1962-63 season, the teams reached the Round of 16. In the first leg, held at the Carlos Tartiere on 12th May 1963, CD Málaga, coached by Chales, sealed a 1-1 draw with a goal from Ocaña. In the return leg, held at La Rosaleda seven days later, the Martiricos team won by 3-1 thanks to goals from Mendi, Luna and Bernardi. The Costa del Sol outfit subsequently qualified to the quarter finals, facing Valencia CF.
  • The second time these teams played one another in this competition was in the 1973-74 season, this time in the 5th round. The first leg took place at La Rosaleda on 30th January 1974, ending in a goalless draw. The return leg was played on 27th March of the same year. On that occasion, the result was 1-1, with the Malaguista goal scored by Álvarez. At that time, away goals were not worth double, so the match went to extra time and then penalties. The Asturian rival won by 4-3 and Marcel Domingo’s CD Málaga were eliminated from the competition.
