Match preview: Málaga-Espanyol

Málaga CF will welcome Espanyol to La Rosaleda for the 31st LaLiga game of the season. Kicking off at 4 p.m., the match will be refereed by Valencian-born Martínez Munuera.

The Malaguistas, 8th place in the table with 39 points, are up against Espanyol, in 12th place with 35 points.  During the first round game in Cataluña, Espanyol defeated Málaga by 2-0 with two goals from Hernán Pérez.  The las League clash at Martiricos between these rivals also resulted in a ‘perica’ victory by 0-2, thanks to goals from Álvaro González and Sergio García.

Vera, legendary goalkeeper with CD Málaga and RCD Espanyol

Alfredo Vera Buendía was born on 13th February 1930 in Barcelona.  He played with various teams in Barcelona as an amateur before joining RCD Espanyol in 1949, where he stayed until 1952.  It was then he moved to CD Málaga, making his debut on 21st September 1952 in the 2nd First Division game of the season against Atlético Madrid (1-2).  This was the first of his 74 matches with Málaga: 48 in the First Division; 19 in the Second Division; and another 7 (promotion to First Division).

He was a CD Málaga goalkeeper in the 6-0 victory against Real Madrid, on 15th March 1953.  The line-up for that game was: Vera, Soto, Méndez, Rubio, Rodríguez, Loli, Becerril, Mora, Galacho, Bazán and Estruch.

His last match as a CD Málaga player was on 27th February 1955, Real Valladolid 3-2 CD Málaga, the 25th First Division game of the season.  After leaving Málaga he signed to Sevilla FC and later continued his career with Atlético de Madrid, Sporting de Gijón and Terrassa FC, where he retired in 1961.  Following this he coached various teams in Cataluña.  Vera passed away in Barcelona on 19th January, aged 85.
