Match preview: Málaga-Deportivo

Málaga CF will welcome Deportivo de La Coruña on Saturday at La Rosaleda for the 13th LaLiga Santander match. Vizcaya-born, Bikandi Garrido will officiate tomorrow, debuting a new kick-off time (13:00).

This will be the 14th time Málaga CF and RC Deportivo have come up against each other in a League match at La Rosaleda, with a balance of three victories, eight draws and two defeats for the Malaguistas.  Darío Silva (MCF) and Lionel Scaloni (Deportivo), with three goals, are the top scorers in League clashes between these two rivals, held at Martiricos.

To take into account 

  • Málaga CF could match their best record of consecutive wins at La Rosaleda in LaLiga (5) if they defeat Deportivo. In 2011/12, with Manuel Pellegrini at the helm, the team achieved five victories on the run in the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th and 29th matches of the season, against Sevilla FC, RCD Mallorca, Real Zaragoza, Levante UD and Rayo Vallecano respectively.
  • Sandro is going for his fifth consecutive goal at home. The Malaguista ‘pichichi’ has scored four goals on the run in Málaga’s last four matches at La Rosaleda, which ended with victories against Eibar, Athletic, Leganés and Sporting.

 

Curiosities | Historical anecdotes

  • After the First Division competition came to an end in 1952/53, CD Málaga coach, Helenio Herrera moved to Deportivo to head up the team in the promotion stage to the First Division.
  • The legendary Juan Arza, CD Málaga player in the 1942/43 campaign, was also coach of Deportivo de La Coruña. A similar case was that of Carlos Torres, who played for CD Málaga and was also a player and coach with Deportivo.

 

The first MCF-Deportivo

On 5th March 2000, the first Málaga CF-Deportivo de La Coruña clash took place, corresponding to the 27th First Division match of 1999/00.  Málaga CF welcomed the category leaders (who ending up champions), and won by 1-0 with an early goal from Darío Silva.  The match was marked by injuries suffered by Malaguista players, including Edgar, who was unable to play any more games that season.
