Match preview: Athletic-Málaga

Málaga CF is visiting the new San Mamés stadium to face Athletic de Bilbao on Sunday at 8:30 p.m., for the 14th LaLiga game of the season, refereed by Catalán-born Álvarez Izquierdo.

The Blue and Whites, in 18th place with 10 points, will come up against 7th placed Athletic Club with 20 points.  Last season, with referee, Álvarez Izquierdo in charge, Málaga drew in League competition against Athletic at San Mamés.  It was the 20th game of the 2014/15 season, and ended in a 1-1 draw, with a local goal from San José and Javi Guerra for the ‘Malaguistas’.

Since 1999, both clubs have faced each other 30 times in official matches (League and Cup), with a completely even scoresheet: 10 victories, 10 draws and 10 defeats for each side.  MCF won twice at the old San Mamés stadium.  The first was a brilliant 1-3 victory in 2000/01, and the second time by 1-2 in 2005/06, with Blue and Whites’ goals from Edgar and Hidalgo, under coach, Antonio Tapia.

To take into account:

  • Since the last promotion in 2008, Málaga has not been victorious in Bilbao in LaLiga.  They have achieved 4 draws out of 7 games, with the result being 1-1 3 times (seasons 09/10, 10/11 and 15/16) and 0-0 in 2012/13.
  • With regards to players in common, there have been no players who have been part of both Athletic Club de Bilbao and Málaga Club de Fútbol.
  • ‘Malaguista’ striker, Charles scored the first goal at the new San Mamés, 11 minutes into the Athletic Club 3-2 Celta de Vigo match (16/09/2013).

 Curious facts:

  • CD Málaga, in their 20 First Division visits to San Mamés, never secured a win.
  • Players in common Athletic Club-CD Málaga: Aroma, Bilbao, Garay, Deusto, Uriarte, Burgueña, Martín and Txirri.
  • Manuel López “Travieso”, who was an international with Spain, played for Athletic Club and FC Malagueño, where he was a player-coach.
