There was a great atmosphere in the stands to welcome the Whites to Martiricos. José González introduced some changes to the defence, placing Torres in the middle in place of sanctioned Luis Hernández, and Ricca on the left wing: in midfield, Adrián accompanied Iturra and Lacen, and upfront was Ideye, flanked on the wings by Chory and Rolan. In minute 2, Benzema narrowly missed out on the first attempt to get on the scoreboard.

After the first quarter of an hour of play, equality prevailed, with an orderly Málaga at the back against a Madrid with ex Blue and Whites’ player, Isco controlling operations. In 16’, a header from Kovacic forced a superb save by Roberto. Chory, in 22’, tried his luck with a shot deflected to the left of Keylor Navas. Lucas Vázquez, following an Isco pass, nearly scored a minute later in a pacey Madrid combination.

Before the half hour, a subtle yet precise shot from Isco put Zidane’s men in the lead (29’, 0-1). The Málaga-born number ‘22’, omnipresent throughout, could have scored another in the 33rd minute, and again with a shot that landed straight into Roberto’s hands in 39’. Rosales, from a free kick, made an attempt in 42’. Before the half-time whistle (44’), Iturra anticipated Casemiro on the edge of the rival area, but missed out on the best and most promising opportunity for the Malaguistas in a one-on-one with Navas.

In the second half, Madrid circled around Roberto’s goal, thanks to an inside pass from Isco to Lucas, that Benzema failed to convert in 50’. Bueno, in place of Lacen, was the first substitution by González for MCF. The team competed well against the powerful adversary, but the punch shown by the visitors made the difference. Following a brilliant display, Benzema and Isco served the next Madrid goal on a plate to Casemiro (0-2, 63’).

In 70’, Ignasi Miquel was forced to abandon the field of play due to physical problems, meaning reserve team defender, Iván Rodríguez made his official debut with Málaga CF. Lestienne for Ideye, in 78’, was the final Blue and Whites’ substitution. The Belgian defender, with a cross shot, could have clawed one back no sooner had he joined play (81’). Ramos, incorporated on the attack, coulnd’t surpass Roberto in 86’ on a counter-attack, the last clear chance for the Whites.

Diego Rolan, in stoppage time, beat Navas just before the referee blew the final whistle (1-2, 93’). The fifth goal of the season for Málaga CF’s top scorer in LaLiga, with the home side suffering a minimal defeat to remain at the bottom of the First Division.
