Málaga Club de Fútbol drew 1-1 with Villarreal Club de Fútbol in the 15th BBVA League game of the season, held at El Madrigal. Bruno put the local side in the lead in minute 32, and a Weligton equaliser in stoppage time evened up the score board.
There were two changes to Málaga Club de Fútbol’s line-up at El Madrigal, compared to last week. Right back, Jesús Gámez was back on the pitch following a one-match ban due to an accumulation of yellow cards, and Camacho joined Tissone and Sergi Darder in midfield, replacing Angeleri and Portillo, the latter banned from this game.
Málaga Club de Fútbol dominated the ball for the first 15 minutes of play, and despite not creating any clear goal opportunities, the team showed good discipline and a strong attacking display. During the Blue and Whites’ first shot at goal, Eliseu was the object of an obvious penalty that was ignored by the referee.
Samuel, who was playing very well with Juanmi, was forced to abandon the match due to injury, which put the brakes on the Málaga attack and gave Villarreal an opportunity. Fabrice took Samuel’s place, but he was unable to prevent Jaume Costa gaining possession which led to the first goal. The left back passed to Cani which set up an assist for Bruno, who found the net to put Villareal 1-0 in the lead. Uche looked set for glory beforehand as he overcame the ‘Malaguista’ defence, but he wasn’t prepared for the mighty Willy who stopped the earlier Villarreal goal. The Blue and Whites were determined to equalise before half time, but didn’t give former Málaga keeper, Sergio Asenjo anything to worry about.
Málaga Club de Fútbol maintained a solid attack against a strong Villarreal, as they searched for a goal. The coach made some changes to the line-up, bringing on Pedro Morales in place of Tissone, hoping to turn the tables for the remainder of the match. Eliseu came close to a goal, as did Pedro Morales, but neither managed to hit the target.
Málaga Club de Fútbol was surrounding the goal area and posing a serious threat to Marcelino García’s men. Darder, who put on an excellent performance, was forced to abandon play due to injury. Anderson took his place and joined the Blue and Whites’ fight to equalise.
Málaga’s hard work eventually paid off. It was Weligton who outwitted the Villarreal defence following an Eliseu corner, to head the ball into the net past Asenjo, and give Bernd Schuster’s men a well-deserved point.
