Kilometre 31: Málaga-Ponferradina

A very hard-fought point that could have been two more against one of the most powerful rivals in the division. Málaga went from strength to strength to move ever closer to a win at La Rosaleda.

We look back at some of the highlights of #MálagaPonferradina in our usual kilometre:

Clean sheet, the start of everything

It may seem obvious, but it’s certainly not a trivial matter. If you’re able to keep a clean sheet, at least you’ll have another point in the pot. Since the victory in Alcorcón on matchday 22, Málaga haven’t been able to maintain a clean sheet until now. The defensive improvement in recent weeks is palpable, as is Dani Barrio’s performance in goal. Onwards and upwards.

Changes in defence

Natxo only introduced two changes in relation to the previous match in Lezama. The most significant, the entrance of Escassi in place of injured Peybernes. The player from El Palo wasn’t in the centre, but on the pivot in the wide area. Victor and Cufré stayed on the wings and Lombán returned to perform at a great level. Juande’s injury gave minutes to Andrés Caro, with the young defender showing good poise and solvency.

One match less, same distance

We remain seven points in front of Real Sociedad B, who are in 19th place in the standings, with MCF in 16th place with 37 points. With 11 matches remaining until the end of the competition, the psychological 50-point mark that usually secures permanence is 13 points away. With five earned from the past nine in play, the pace of accumulating points is positive.

11.378 fans

As well as a group of rival fans, there was a good crowd at La Rosaleda last night. Season ticket holders, who never fail, once again showed their endless loyalty. The Malagueños and Malaguistas proved their ongoing encouragement and solidarity, since the fans who purchased their tickets collaborated to help the Ukrainian people. We are proud to have such a great 'player number 12'.
