Juanmi extends his winning streak securing a triumph against Getafe in the first leg of the knockouts

Málaga Club de Fútbol and Getafe Club de Fútbol have played their first knockout match of the Copa del Rey in the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez de Getafe stadium.

The match began with a very intense Getafe who had one very good chance of a goal in second minute of the game.  Clearly Getafe were looking to progress but the Málaga defence was serious and quick, stopping the home side in their tracks.  As the minutes passed, the Malaguistas got some balance back with the possession of the ball, they had their first chances, including a free kick that landed close to Codina’s goal.

In these first 20 minutes, there weren’t too many other approaches, except for a Getafe shot that Willy Caballero saved, meaning the goalkeepers could rest pretty easy. There was more action in midfield as Málaga were looking to quickly take the ball to the attackers Juanmi, Van Nistelrooy, Joaquín and Buonanotte, who were planning a surprise assault from both wings.

In the following minutes it was Getafe who were the team creating the most danger, especially on the right wing with various passes and corners in the Azulones’ favour.  For their part, Van Nistelrooy’s combination moves were Málaga’s best options, although the scoreboard remained defiantly showing a goalless draw as the half time whistle blew.

The second half began with the same players and with Málaga trying to shock the upfront Getafe defence but, again, it was Getafe who had the air of danger about them and they had some good chances in two counter-attacks that they failed to resolve in their favour.

With three changes made to Málaga’s line-up and with Portillo, Toulalan and Cazorla on out on the Alfonso Pérez de Getafe pitch, Málaga started to put some trouble the way of the home side, although nothing was converted.

Málaga’s best chance came from Juanmi, a pass from Joaquín: the Malaguista youth player shot the ball above Codina, and it ended up hitting the post.

And then, just a few minutes later, Málaga’s goal came after a great move from Gámez on the right wing, who passed it to Juanmi.  Codina may have deflected the Coin-born player’s first shot, but not this second one.  It was minute 84 and Málaga led with one very important goal in this knockout match.

And with one more attempt by Juanmi, and a shot by Gavilán that failed to deliver, the match drew to a close with Málaga taking the advantage in this leg of the Copa del Rey.
