Joaquín: “Benito Villamarín is a ground I have always done well in”

Joaquín Sánchez spoke to the media in the Athletics Stadium’s press room.

(Beginning of a winning streak). “Of course, when a team wins after three defeats, the morale changes.  Now we have a renewed optimism for the next match against Betis. We recovered Europa League positions and we must continue moving up.”

(Adding up away) “We must get used to getting points away. In La Rosaleda we’ve won every game, except for the one against Real Madrid.  But away we’ve let too many games escape us with the defeats against Levante and Rayo.  We’ve got to get back the football that makes us feel strong: showing wisdom at the back and force upfront.”

(Style of play) “We’ve got to keep on playing good football.  But for that we need a little time. Brilliant play is not something that just happens over time.  There’s still a long way to go and this team is going to go far.”

(Betis) “Betis is a team that’s playing some good football.  Although they’re right in a dip. Such conesutive defeats do get you down.  It’s not a comfortable place to be.  They will be a tough rival, they’re a serious squad and with a lot of force.  But we must focus ourselves on the job in hand.”

(Special match) “It’s not the first time I’ve played against them. It’s going to be a very special match as I’ll be going back to see a team that gave me everything, it’ll be a very special experience. If I score there I won’t celebrate it, due to my ‘bético’ past.  Although Benito Villamarín is a ground I’ve always played well in.  The last game I played there, I scored two goals, but despite that as I left I was applauded.  I have no doubt there’ll be a great welcome.
