It wasn’t to be (0-1)

Defeat for Málaga CF against RC Deportivo, at La Rosaleda, in the second leg of the promotion play-off tie to LaLiga Santander. A goal from Bergantiños led the Galician rival to victory, after they won the first leg (4-2), taking away the First Division dream from the Malaguistas.

An historic turnout at Martiricos and ‘Málaga, la Bombonera’ sung acapella resonating like never before in the run-up to kick-off. On the pitch, there were four changes in regard to the first leg at Riazor, with Cifuentes and Juankar on the wing, Hicham on the right and Harper upfront.

The team got off to an energetic start with the ball and piled the pressure on without it in Deportivo’s defensive area. In minute 9, Ontiveros made his first appearance with a shot that nearly culminated in a Harper header into goal. The Marbella-born player, sublime, almost nailed it with a cross shot that hit the post in 12’. Immediately afterwards, he launched a free kick in 14’ to the left of the Deportivo goal.

Past the midway point of the first half the tables didn’t change, as the Malaguistas dominated against a well-positioned rival. Dépor didn’t generate the first dangerous chance until 41’, with a toxic shot from Edu Expósito that grazed the crossbar. Ontiveros, who else, propelled another shot to the crossbar in 44’. At half-time the score was still 0-0.

In the second half, Víctor Sánchez del Amo substituted Hicham for Renato Santos. In 47’, Harper, alone, skied the ball. Adrián, in 51’ and 53’ tried his luck with two long shots towards the target. Two minutes later, Koné replaced Harper to accompany Blanco Leschuk upfront.

Faithful to their gameplay, Málaga kept on insisting against a well-equipped opponent at the back, with no gaps in their defence. Blanco Leschuk, with a powerful shot, forced a great Dani Giménez save in 65’. Renato, in 68’, made an attempt from outside the area but didn’t find the net.

And, as these things happen in football, the visitors took the lead with a goal from Bergantiños that Munir didn’t manage to save (0-1, 82’). Straight after came the third Málaga substitution, in which Pacheco replaced Cifuentes (83’). However, Dépor now had a three-goal advantage and there was no time to turn things around. A minimal defeat for the home side at the final whistle, and a 5-2 win on aggregate for Dépor, who go on to the next round of the promotion play-offs to LaLiga Santander. The end of the season for Málaga CF, who will play in the silver division again for the 2019/20 season.
