Defeat in stoppage time in the second preseason friendly (1-2)

Málaga CF lost to Cádiz CF at the Dama de Noche Football Pitches in Marbella. Hoyos put the Malaguistas in the lead, but Mauro and Sergio González, the latter just before the final whistle, led the Yellows to victory.

Like in the first match of the preseason against Valladolid, Pellicer opted for a starting-11 made up of solely homegrown players from the MCF Academy, namely: Gonzalo; Ismael (captain), Quintana, Juande, Cristo; D. Larrubia, Ramón, Benkhemassa, T. Morente; Hoyos and Orlando Sá.

There were numerous alternatives at the start of play, but it was Málaga who went out in front. A typical Tete Morente play from the left, an Orlando Sá pass featuring a Cádiz defender at the near post, then Jesús Hoyos appeared at the far post to slam the ball into the net (1-0, 13’). The young player from Tenerife, who crashed the ball into the crossbar in the last friendly, was most unforgiving this time around.

Cádiz reacted midway through the first half. Veteran striker, Negredo, following a Gonzalo clearance, narrowly missed an equaliser in 23’. A minute later, Malbasic had a clear opportunity in a one-on-one. Yet it was Marcos Mauro, with a header from a set piece, who took the score level (1-1, 30’) just before the water break.

In the final part of the first half, MCF again generated several dangerous opportunities. Orlando Sá, in 37’ and 38’, came close to glory but lacked punch. Then Larrubia, with a quality play, struck with intent, forcing an impressive save by Cifuentes in 40’. At half-time the scoreboard showed 1-1.

In the second half, Sergio Pellicer chose the following line-up: Munir; Ismael, Luis Hernández (capitán), Lombán, Cristo; Mini, Rolón, José Rodríguez; Issa Fomba, Julio and Mike. Álvaro Cervera’s Cádiz also made numerous changes, as is usual during the preseason.

In minute 52, a phenomenal cross from Cristo was headed by Fomba, but was stopped in its tracks by the rival keeper. Four minutes later, Keidi came on in place of Cristo. The Albanian, in minute 60, tried his luck from outside the area, and subsequently Mike missed out on a goal by a whisker. Ale Benítez, for Ismael (67’) was the next Blue and White substitution in defence.

Following the second water break, the match entered the final stages with both sides noticing the effort being made and the high temperatures. In addition, Julio had to abandon play, which saw Hoyos come back on for the Valencian player in 82’. Soon after, Munir tested his reflexes with a save from a near miss by Pombo. Just before the 90th minute, the Melilla-born ‘Zamora’ left his place in goal to make way for Strindholm. The young Swedish international, despite a good first save, didn’t manage to stop the 1-2 (91’) the work of Sergio González just before referee, Chavet García blew the final whistle. The second test of the preseason and the first defeat for Málaga CF.
