All square in first home game of the season (1-1)

Málaga CF went level following an initial goal from UD Las Palmas, at La Rosaleda, on LaLiga SmartBank matchday 2. Rubén Castro put the visitors in the lead at the start of the second half, whilst Adrián evened up the scoreboard from the penalty spot, 10 minutes before the final whistle.

The debut home game of the season kicked off with fans singing the hymn a cappella under an intense heat. On the pitch, Víctor changed the system of central defenders used a week ago in Santander for a highly flexible 4-2-3-1 formation. Venezuelan players, Mikel and Juanpi, together with Cifuentes and Pacheco were new to the Malaguista starting-11 tonight.

In minute 9, the first dangerous approach arrived from a gameplay generated on the right between Cifuentes and Renato, that was deflected by the rival defence. In 15’, following an error by the Las Palmas keeper, Adrián narrowly missed out on a goal that grazed the left post. Málaga’s actions matured against Pepe Mel’s side awaiting an opportunity. The first glimpse of an opportunity, in 21’, came via homegrown player Pedri with a long shot.

Ten minutes later, a toned, fired up Juanpi launched a left-footer into the right post of the Las Palmas goal. The reward of a goal, despite well-deserved, didn’t arrive for the Blue and Whites. At half-time, the score remained at 0-0.

In the second half, Rubén Castro made the most of a defensive misapplication to overcome Munir and open the scoring (0-1, 49’). The Melilla-born goalkeeper, shortly afterwards, prevented a second goal for the visitors from a powerful shot at the target by Lemos. In 57’, Víctor made a substitution focused on the attack, bringing on homegrown player Hugo in place of Boulahroud.

In 68’, an incisive Cifuentes appeared, shooting with intent towards Josep Martínez’s goal, that was stopped with a fist save. In the final stages of play, a foul on Juanpi led to a penalty in favour of the home side that was coolly converted by Adrián (1-1, 80). The second goal for the captain in two league games. Two minutes later, a sublime Juanpi filtered a pass between the lines to leave Hugo unmarked in front of the rival keeper, but his cross went wide.

Málaga pressed for a second goal. In 89’ Juanpi appeared again with a long shot that was deflected by the keeper. However, there was no more time for a winning goal, and the team claims four out of a possible six points so far this season. Statistically speaking, a good start to the 19/20 season.
