A thousand times MCF… From Adra to Málaga-Real Madrid

The last match of 2016/17 against Real Madrid, at La Rosaleda, was official number 1,000 for Málaga Club de Fútbol as an entity.

Since its incorporation as Málaga CF S.A.D. on 29th July 1994, the Blue and Whites’ team has played a total of 1,000 official matches. The first one, on 4th September 1994, was away in Adra (Almería) in the 1st Group IX Third Division match. The most recent was held last Sunday at La Rosaleda, the 38th First Division match against Real Madrid (see image gallery here). After kicking off this season at 960 games, the 38 in LaLiga Santander and two Copa del Rey matches during 2016/17, means the Club reaches a round 1,000 games.

Over nearly 23 years as MCF, the Malaguista first team has played 608 matches in the First Division (in 16 seasons), remaining in the elite for nine consecutive seasons, an absolute record under any denomination of the Club.  In the Second Division, they have played 126 matches; in Group IV of Second B, 114 matches; in Group IX of the Third Division, 40 matches; in the Copa del Rey, 72 games; in the UEFA Champions League, 12 matches; in the UEFA Cup, 10 matches; the Intertoto Cup, six games; Second Division Promotion, six matches; and another six in 2B promotion.

The two seasons during which the most official matches were played was in 2002/03 and 2012/13, totalling 56 in both, with the memorable and successful participations in European competitions. On the one hand, the Intertoto Cup and reaching the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup; and on the other, the preliminary stage, group phase and brilliant epilogue in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Statistically, MCF’s first campaign (1994/95) was the best in regard to the number of victories (35 in 48 games), fewest defeats (2), most goals scored (116, an average of 2’4 per game), and fewest goals conceded (22, 0’45 per game). It all began in Adra…here’s to the next 1,000!
