2018, a glorious year for Málaga Femenino

The end of what has been a remarkable year for the Blue and White team is almost upon us. Here we review some of the milestones of the Women’s teams in a year that is already part of Málaga CF’s history.

First Division promotion

Málaga CF Femenino achieved their passport to the elite on 27th May 2018 at 14:00 Canary Islands time (15:00 mainland time). It was done with a goal by young Malagueña, María Ruiz. The player from Almáchar, who wasn’t part of the starting line-up in this game, joined play in the second half and revolutionised the match. In minute 72 Málaga Femenino took glory with a beautiful goal from the Malaguista. The 0-1 against CD Femarguín marked the beginning of the path in Liga Iberdrola.

I Costa del Sol Femenino Cup

The I Costa del Sol Femenino Cup took place on 12th August 2018 at the El Pozuelo ground (Torremolinos). Málaga were up against Clube Futebol Benfica and secured a 4-0 victory thanks to goals from María Ruiz, Celia (2) and Natalia. This was an historic match, as it was the first time the Costa del Sol had a women’s version.

First goal in Liga Iberdrola

Competing in the Women’s First Division in Spain is no easy feat. Little by little Málaga CF Femenino have been adapting to the category, and on matchday 5 achieved their first win and first goal. The player whose name will be remembered for scoring the first goal in Liga Iberdrola in the 2018/19 season was Dominika. It was in minute 29 against RCD Espanyol at the Federación Malagueña ground, on 14th October 2018. Málaga won by 2-1, the other goal was scored by María Ruiz in minute 39.

Return to the Copa de la Reina

The return to the First Division meant a return to the Copa de la Reina. The Malaguista squad faced Atlético de Madrid Femenino on 25th November 2018. Despite the defeat (4-2), the Blue and Whites stood up to the current winter leaders of the 2018/19 season. The Málaga goals were the work of Adriana and Misa.

Reserve team in Second Division

Success in Women’s football in 2018 wasn’t solely for the first team. The Málaga Femenino reserve team also secured promotion, going on to form part of Segunda División Nacional Group IV. The team, coached by Ayala, defeated Cádiz CF in the last qualifier by 0-2, with goals from Luisa and Carmen, to obtain a place in the Second Division. The passport to the silver division was achieved on 25th June 2018.

Cadete Femenino, champions of Andalucía

The cadete squad also enjoyed success in 2018. The second women’s team from the MCF Academy won the Andalusian Championships on 24th June 2018 after beating UD Pavia by 7-0 in the semi-finals of the tournament, and Real Betis by 3-0 in the final.
