2010-2020: THE ERA OF SHEIKH ABDULLAH AL THANI

The economic constraints of Málaga CF led the president and majority shareholder, Fernando Sanz, to look for investors for the Club, which took him to Doha (Qatar) where he met Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani, a prestigious businessman belonging to the Qatari Royal Family.  After finalising the sale of shares, Al Thani was presented as the new owner of Málaga CF on 25th June 2010, and was appointed Chairman at the Extraordinary Meeting of Shareholders on 27th July.

The arrival of players with great projection and international recognition, coupled with the creation of a major sports structure, converted Málaga CF into the fastest growing Club in Europe in the first year of Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani’s presidency.

After a brilliant 2012/13 season, where the Malaguistas enjoyed their team’s success, on 13th May 20120, Manuel Pellegrini’s men achieved the highest League ranking in Blue and Whites’ history, after defeating Sporting de Gijón at La Rosaleda (1-0) in the last League game.  Claiming 4th place allowed the team to qualify for the Champions League play-offs in 2012/13.

In the 2012/13 season, Málaga CF took another step forward in the history of Málaga football.  The Malaguista team took the Blue and Whites’ colours to some of the best stadiums in Europe, and was at the point of reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, but suffered an epic defeat in the quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund.  The team finished in a phenomenal sixth place in LaLiga, the second best ranking in the history of the Club.

After the Champions dream came a season of transition with Schuster at the helm, marked by a more austere economic level during the 2013/14 season.  With the arrival of coach, Javi Gracia, the team remained in the comfortable area of the table, even circling around European positions.  Reaching 9th place in 2014/15, and 8th place in 2015/16 showed the excellent health of the sports entity, which continues in the Spanish footballing elite for the 10th consecutive year.
