This is the 12th encounter between these teams at La Rosaleda, with four victories for the Blue and Whites, five draws and two defeats. The unforgettable Intertoto Cup final in 2002 saw Málaga enter European competition for the first time.

Málaga Club de Fútbol lost by 3-0 to Athletic Club in the 33rd BBVA League game of the season. Aduriz opened the scoring after just three minutes, and scored again at the start of the second half. Ander Herrera scored goal number three in tonight’s game, and although the Blue and Whites generated goal opportunities, they didn’t manage to find the net. The Málaga players all wore black armbands in memory of Américo, who passed away last Monday.
