Victory against Celta (1-0)

Málaga Club de Fútbol defeated Real Club Celta de Vigo by 1-0 in tonight’s 15th BBVA League game of the season held at La Rosaleda. A fantastic header by Samuel in minute 21 following impressive play led to the only goal of the match. The Blue and Whites claimed three important points at La Rosaleda following a hard-fought match, leaving Javi Gracia’s men in the top part of the table.

Javi Gracia selected the same line-up that made history at the Riazor stadium last weekend for one of the top teams in the League competition, Real Club Celta de Vigo, despite the rival suffering a run of bad results in recent games.  With no changes to the Málaga line-up, Celta de Vigo coach, Berizzo left Nolito and Larrivey on the bench tonight.
During the first half, Málaga CF ceded possession to Celta de Vigo, who didn’t cause too much trouble for Kameni.  The visitors’ best chance to score was from a powerful shot by Orellana, but a double save by the Cameroon-born keeper prevented the rival taking the lead.  The Blue and Whites’ were comfortable on the pitch and surprised the rival on the counter-attack.  This is how they took the 1-0 lead.  A counter-attack which saw Santa Cruz set up a wonderful chance for Samuel, who with a massive header (reminiscent of some of Dely Valdés’ best goals, who was a specialist in this type of shot) opened the scoring.
Roque came close to increasing the Blue and Whites’ lead before half-time, but a great save by Sergio kept the score board the same.  The end of the first half saw Weligton suffer a strong blow to one of his knees following a fall, but the Brazilian-born defender made it through the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, Weligton had to stop play and was substituted at the start of the second half by Miguel Torres.  The dynamic of play remained the same as both sides battled heavy rain. Celta de Vigo brought on Nolito and Álex López in their search for a goal, against a hard-working Málaga CF.
Charles found the back of the net with a through ball, but the goal was disallowed by the referee for being offside.  The best opportunity for Gracia’s men to increase their lead was a promising display by Recio, but he didn’t make the target.  The score board stayed the same, leaving the three points at La Rosaleda.
Málaga Club de Fútbol is now preparing for the last two matches of this year.  The return leg of the Copa del Rey knockout round takes place on Thursday at La Rosaleda against Deportivo de la Coruña, and Sunday’s match at the Martínez Valero against Elche will see out 2014 for Javi Gracia’s team.
