Málaga CF – Granada CF match preview

Málaga Club de Fútbol will welcome Granada CF to La Rosaleda on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. This Andalucían derby marks the 13th LaLiga game of the season, refereed by Catalán-born Estrada Fernández.

The ‘Malaguistas’, in 20th position with nine points, face Granada, who occupy 17th place with 10 points.  This will be the 5th First Division game between these rivals (as MCF) at the Martiricos stadium, resulting in numerous wins for the Blue and Whites: four victories out of four games, with 14 goals scored and two conceded for Málaga.

The first match at the Blue and Whites’ stadium between Málaga CF and Granada CF in the footballing elite was the 2nd of the 2011/12 season, which ended in a 4-0 victory for the locals, with two goals each for Cazorla and Joaquín.  This was the biggest win between both rivals, along with another 4-0 win in the 15th match of the 2012/13 season, with ‘Malaguista’ goals from Camacho, Joaquín, Saviola and Santa Cruz.  The last match at La Rosaleda, which took place in 2014/15, ended in a 2-1 victory for Málaga (Antunes –penalty - and Santa Cruz / El Arabi), in the 7th League game of the season.

Statistics:

  • First encounter on the bench between Gracia (85 matches in LaLiga, 50 with MCF) and Sandoval (54 matches in LaLiga, 16 with Granada).
  • Estrada Fernández has refereed Málaga at home on eight occasions, resulting in one win, three draws and four defeats.  With Granada as visitors, Estrada has arbitrated five games, ending in one victory, two draws and two defeats.
  • The top three ‘Malaguistas’ who have played the most matches in LaLiga: Duda (311), Kameni (284) and Weligton (195, all with MCF).

  • The following players have been part of both teams (as MCF): Geijo, Recio, Iturra, Juankar and Buonanotte.
  • The 11th match? Victory?  Duda has played 10 matches in his career refereed by Estrada Fernández, accumulating six draws and four defeats.
  • Camacho, notable absence: He has played the most MCF-Granada games (three matches, tied with Santa Cruz and former players, Eliseu, Willy and Gámez) and scored the most goals, along with the now Betis player, Joaquín, with a total of three goals.
