Málaga CF defeat Zamora in their first match in Venezuela (0-3)

Málaga were victorious in their match against Zamora, the first in Venezuela for Manuel Pellegrini’s men. Battling a heavy downpour that lasted for the entire 90 minutes, the Blue and Whites dominated the local side, who maintained the pulse and rhythm of the game throughout the first half. However, the visitors’ performance in the second half decided the match. Play got underway on Friday at 7:30 p.m. local time, 2 a.m in Spain.

Zamora FC, Closing Tournament champions in 2011, kicked off the match with rapid and incisive play on the attack, creating the first goal opportunity of the game.  After just 30 minutes, González made it to the penalty area single-handedly, with just Willy in his way, though the Málaga defence soon prevented the goal.

Málaga, who were playing the third team, dressed in the green strip, nearly saw their first goal from Portillo, but goalkeeper Forero saw their hopes dashed.

The Blue and Whites demonstrated more effective play in the second half.  A beautiful kick from Maresca put Málaga on the score board first, in the 4th minute of the second half.  Following the Malaguista goal, a Luis Yáñez cross shot nearly got through Kameni’s defence, but failed.  Pellegrini’s men were on the lookout for the second goal, which came almost immediately from Diego Bounanotte, making it impossible for the Zamora keeper to save.

After the second goal, Zamora began to suffer with the water-logged pitch, though they did maintain their intensive play.  However reserve player Juanmi found the ball at the edge of the penalty area, to score Málaga’s third goal, with just 15 minutes left in play.

Weligton, as team captain, was presented with the trophy of the Baniplus Tournament.
